Welcome to my website/blog. Here you will find thoughts and information on three main subjects: Entrepreneurship, Educational Games and Simulations, and the Economics of Life.
Who is this website for?
Anyone interested in the above noted subjects. You will also find a common underlying theme of experiential learning throughout the content.
What will you find?
Content includes (my) published and unpublished articles, white papers, industry information, relevant links, and general thoughts and comments about the past, present, and future of the above noted subjects. This is not a personal journal. You will not find daily (or weekly) postings, unnecessary personal information, photos and stories of family, musings, rants, or anything else that is clearly not informative or thought provoking.
Who am I?
I am Mathew Georghiou, founder and CEO of MediaSpark Inc., a software development and publishing company. Prior to MediaSpark, I was an engineer in-the-trenches at Celestica (formerly IBM) - a leading electronics manufacturer.
Since founding MediaSpark in 1994, I have led hundreds of technology, design, and consulting projects for MediaSpark and our many clients, which include startups, microbusinesses, educational institutions, non-profits, governments, and large multinationals. In addition to my daily sales, marketing, finance, and CEO duties, I have also led the design and production of the award-winning GoVenture products - perhaps the most extensive line of educational games and simulations in the world, all built upon a foundation of experiential learning.
What's my motivation for launching this website?
I am motivated to write about these subjects because either not enough is written about them (as is the case with educational games and simulations), or lots is written about the subject (as is the case with entrepreneurshp and business) but my personal feeling is that most is fluff, cliche, academic, and does not reflect the in-the-trenches realities.
People often over-simplify things, which leads to failure because of lack of understanding. Or, they believe things are so complex that they become paralyzed and won't take action. To succeed, we must recognize that business and life are indeed complex, but individual decisions can be broken down to a series of smaller, less complex, often simple, decisions. Half the battle is understanding the options and analyzing the benefits and risks of each in order to make the right decision that is consistent with your objectives. Determining what those options are and how to focus in on the key decisions that need to be made comes with experience - either your own or learning from that of others - which leads me to my first piece of advice: Always consider the experiences of others but never assume them as your own.
So, is this a commercial website/blog?
If you are like me and question the source and motivation of everything you read (and you should), you may be wondering if this is truly a personal website/blog or just a thinly veiled marketing vehicle for me and my company. Well, the answer is that it's a bit of both.
Everything you read here reflects what I truly believe (at the time of writing, anyway). And, since I make a living pursuing the primary subjects discussed in this blog - namely entrepreneurship, educational games and simulations, and the economics of life - then there is a natural and undeniable connection with the commercial side of my life.
Does that mean I will covertly attempt to trick you into buying my company's products with clever language and textual charm? Ahh, no. I've got better things to do and so do you. My motto is to only use my persuasive powers for good, not evil. (And if I ever find myself treading closely to the evil line, I will always disclose my motivation for doing so.)
I hope you find value in what you read.
Is that a photo of me in the header?
Nope. Just an unsuspecting stock image.
Do I do speaking engagements?
Yes, frequently - probably hundreds by now. I have conducted seminars and spoken on topics such as entrepreneurship, business, technology, innovation, education, marketing, economic development, and more throughout North America. Please contact me if you think I may be a fit for your event.
